Frederick Newland-Pedley, F.R.C.S., L.D.S.

Founded the Guy's Dental School in 1889.

In addition to much information that can be found on his and on the , Frederick Newland Pedley was born on 21 July 1855, the second of the seven children of Frederick Pedley (1818-1877) and Eliza Pedley née Dolby (1825-1904). His birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1855 in the St George Hanover Square Registration District, Middlesex (now Greater London). On 5 September 1855 he was baptised at St Giles Church, Chalfont Saint Giles, Buckinghamshire.

He was shown as aged 5 years on the census that was undertaken on 7 April 1861. He was living at "The Cottage", Horn Lane, Acton, Middlesex (now Greater London), with his parents and five siblings: Percival Robert Pedley (1853-1918); Arthur Dolby Pedley (1856-1935); Walter Hugh Pedley (1858-1914); Ethel Charlotte Pedley (1859-1898); Hubert Ralph Pedley (1861-1864), together with a female house servant, a nurse and a nursemaid. His father was listed as a "dentist surgical machanicist".

He was described as aged 15 years and a scholar in the census that was conducted on 2 April 1871. He was residing at 1 Wood Vale, Camberwell St. Giles, Camberwell, Surrey (now Greater London), with his parents and three of his siblings: Walter Hugh Pedley; Ethel Charlotte Pedley and Oswald Sainton Pedley (1862-1937) who were all scholars, together with a cook and housemaid. His father was shown as a dentist.

When the census was compiled on 3 April 1881 he was shown as aged 24 years and a medical student living at 242 Camden Road, St Pancras, Middlesex (now Greater London), the home of his two paternal aunts, Emma Pedley and Elizabeth Pedley, together with two female domestic servants. His aunts were both listed as annuitants.

The 1885 edition of The Medical Directory shows him residing at "The Laurels", 242 Camden Road, London NW. The 1890 edition of the London Post Office Directory lists him as a dentist at 32 Devonshire Place, Portland Place, London W.

For his service from February to June 1900, as member of the Civil Squadron of the Imperial Yeomanry Hospital Staff during the Second Boer War, he was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with the Cape Colony clasp.

He was still residing at 32 Devonshire Place, St Marylebone, London, when the census was taken on 31 March 1901. He was shown as aged 45 years, a single man and dental surgeon. Also resident at the property were his butler and a female general servant.

The 1902 edition of the London Post Office Directory showed him listed as Frederick Newland-Pedley note the hyphen), a surgeon dentist at 32 Devonshire Place.

The 1910 editions of The Dentist Register and The General Post Office telephone directories show him recorded at 22 Willow Road, Hampstead, London.

When he completed his census return form on 2 April 1911 he described himself as Frederick Newland-Pedley, aged 55 years, a single man and a retired dentist, still residing in the ten roomed property at 22 Willow Road, Hampstead, together with a manservant, the manservant's wife and their daughter.

He eventually retired to Lake Como, Italy, where, whilst the country was at war with the United Kingdom, he died, aged 88 years, on 4 May 1944. His death was communicated to the British authorities by the neutral Swiss consulate who retained his British passport that had been issued in London on 3 June 1930. They advised that he had died from senile decay at Grandola ed Uniti (Como) Italy. His headstone can be found along the northern wall of the Santa Maria Assunta church graveyard, located in Santa Maria Rezzonico, on the north west shore of Lake Como, Italy. 

Probate records show that his address had been Acquaseria Lago di Como, Italy and that administration of his estate, with a will, was granted on 22 October 1944 to Bertie Lees Read, a hospital clerk. His effects in England totalled £63,416-7s-5d. However, on 27 June 1961, administration of his estate, with a will, was re-granted to Alfred Henry Burfoot, clerk to the Governors of Guy's Hospital. His estate was now shown as £102,494-4s-9d.

He is shown as "FREDERICK NEWLAND PEDLEY" on the memorial tablet in The Colonnade, Guy's Hospital, Great Maze Pond, London, SE1.
