Gavin Alexander Porter

2024: We were contacted by John Stackhouse whose article about Porter will be published in the next issue of Medal News, published by . John kindly provided this photograph and all the information on this page.

Born Adelaide, Australia, Porter came to England in 1910 to study at University College, through which he joined the army, where he excelled. Became a full-time soldier in the Royal Artillery in 1913 and thus entered WW1. Learnt to fly in 1915, first in France and then in Wiltshire. On 5 December 1915 two aircraft, piloted by Porter and Arthur Browne (also Australian) respectively, were sent out to undertake photographic artillery observation. Both were intercepted by German scouts and shot down. These were Australia’s first air-to-air combat deaths. Died near Royes, France.
