George Croydon Marks

Engineer and politician. Born in Eltham. He was apprenticed at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich. In 1882 he joined Tangye Ltd in Birmingham and became head of the lifting-machinery department and an expert in hydraulically operated machinery. He entered parliament in 1906 as a Liberal M.P. In 1929, he moved to Ramsay Macdonald's Labour Party. and soon after was raised to the peerage as Baron Marks of Woolwich. Died at his home, Cerne Abbas, The Avenue, Branksome Park, Poole.
