George Lansbury

George Lansbury

Born Suffolk. Member of the Poplar Borough Council 1903 - 1940, Mayor 1919 - 20 & 1936 - 37.  Member of Parliament, Minister of the Crown, Privy Councillor. Leader of the Labour Party 1932 - 35. Supporter of female suffrage and worked closely with Sylvia Pankhurst. It was as First Commissioner of Works that he constructed the Lido on the Serpentine and also initiated some respect for historic buildings. His son, Edgar, married first Minnie and then with his second wife fathered the actor Angela Lansbury (1925 -2022). George's daughter, Daisy, was mother to (of Clangers fame).
