H. M. Bateman

Cartoonist. Born Henry Mayo Bateman at Moss Vale, Sutton Forest, New South Wales, Australia. His family moved to Britain in 1888, where he studied at Westminster School of Art and Goldsmiths' College. Famous for his cartoons of social embarrassment, each entitled, 'The Man Who.....'. Tired of post-war Britain, he moved to the Maltese island of Gozo, where he died while taking his usual solitary morning walk.
