Henry Doubleday

Naturalist. Born at 62 (the site of which is now number 271) High Street, Epping, Essex. He was the author of the first catalogue of British butterflies and moths, and named a number of new species. His moth collection is held at the Natural History Museum (which also hold the rights on this photo). Died at the same place where he was born. Not to be confused with his cousin Henry Doubleday (1810-1902).

We have collected memorials for just 7 people who we know were born and died in the same building: King Edward VII, Sir Ashton Lever, Sir Herbert Baker, Felix SladeEdward Bowles, Henry Croft and Doubleday. Edward VII was born and died in Buckingham Palace, the two Sirs in their family stately homes, Slade and Bowles in their wealthy family homes, Croft in the workhouse, and Doubleday in the family grocers shop, run by his father before him.
