Sir William Ramsay

Born at 2 Queen's Crescent, Glasgow. he studied in Tübingen and Glasgow. Following the discovery of helium, it occurred to him that there was room in the periodic table for a new eighth group of elements. This led to his discovery of argon and eventually the other 'noble' gases. Knighted in 1902 and awarded the Nobel prize in chemistry in1904. He died at his home Beechcroft, Hazlemere near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
