Jack Kent

Jack Kent

Politician born in Lambeth, with flexible principles.

Kent was working as a clerk at Whitbreads brewery when he helped found the Socialist Party of Great Britain in June 1904. He resigned from the SPGB on 30 March 1908 and later joined the Conservative Party. Became a local councillor in 1912, mayor of Acton 1922–3 and a Middlesex county councillor. That move from SPGB to Conservatives shows an extraordinary willingness to take on new ideas.  Reminds us of that Groucho Marx quote: "Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others."

Acton Alderman, J.P. and member of the Gunnersbury Park Joint Committee in 1926.

On the Gunnersbury Park plaque he is shown as J. Kent. We think we are right to identify this J. Kent as the Jack Kent at but we could be wrong.
