King William IV, Duke of Clarence

The Duke of Clarence became King William IV (The Sailor King), reigning 1830 to 1837. Had a long live-in affair with the actress Mrs Jordan which produced 10 children, all given the surname FitzClarence, but ended in 1811. After 20 years she was paid off when the Duke needed to marry to solve his financial problems. The wife he found, Princess Adelaide, provided him with economic stability, a happy marriage but no children that survived. Thus he produced no heirs and his niece, Victoria, succeeded him.

Was governor of the South Sea company whose trade had been slavery.
