Len Murray

Len Murray

Lionel Murray, known as Len, was a Labour politician and trade union leader, later known as Baron Murray of Epping Forest, OBE, PC.

Born Shropshire. Went to London University. Served in the army in WW2. Worked at an engineering works in Wolverhampton and then went to Oxford University. From 1947 he worked for the Trades Union Congress, of which he became General Secretary in 1973, leading it during the 1978-9 Winter of Discontent and confrontations with Margaret Thatcher's government.

Retired in 1984. Locally, he was a member of the Loughton Methodist Church and Loughton and District Historical Society, and a supporter of many charities.
