Leytonstone House

Built 18th century as a home for the Buxton brewing family. They moved to a new residence in Buckhurst Hill in 1868 and sold the property (the house with its 8 acres) to the Bethnal Green Poor Law Guardians to become a children's home and school, Bethnal Green School.

In 1937 the site became Leytonstone House Hospital, caring for mentally handicapped women, a branch of the South Ockendon Institution for Mental Defectives. From 1970 male patients were admitted. Leytonstone House itself was used as offices for the administrative and medical staff. In 1994 the hospital was closed and the site sold off for private use, with a large part in the north-west demolished to make way for the Tescos megastore.

Currently (2024) Leytonstone House is occupied by the chartered accountants, Barnes Roffe.

The picture source gives no date for this photo (showing the west elevation) but there appears to be a modern style bench in the foreground and  photos are often taken when a property changes hands so it could be c.1994.
