Created out of the Elementary Education Act 1870. The LSB covered the same Inner London area as that of the Metropolitan Board of Works. The members of the LSB were directly elected. The LSB ensured there were sufficient school places for all the children, including the poorest, and in London school attendance was made compulsory for ages 5 – 13. The Boards were seen as expensive and so were abolished with the role of the LSB being taken on by the LCC.
