Mark Hilsly was the son of Mark, an alderman, and Dorothy. His brother was Stephen, a merchant of Cambridge and Oxford. He came from Lincolnshire to be married in London (possibly at Lincoln's Inn). From his two marriages came four children but only two survived him.
He was entitled to heraldic arms, and was associated with Lincoln's Inn, where he was buried.

In one of the historical books listing marriages (Boyd’s) there is a Mark HILSLEY who married a Mary Hunt in 1657 in Harrow. There is also a church baptism record (in Latin) for a John HILSLEY on 7 Dec 1660 in Westminster whose parents were Mark and Jane. This could have been the Mark commemorated on the stone and his second wife.
In the church records there is also a Stephen HILSLEY who married Rebecca Eastwicke on 6 May 1657 in London. He may have been Mark’s brother, referenced on the stone.
