Matthew Arnold

Poet, writer and school inspector. Born at Laleham-on-Thames, Middlesex, son of Thomas Arnold. He won the Newdigate prize in 1843 with a poem on Cromwell. Appointed a lay inspector of schools in 1851 and was frequently sent to inquire into the state of education in France, Germany and Holland. His best known poems include 'The Scholar Gipsy' and 'Dover Beach'. Died in Liverpool when he was waiting to meet his daughter returning from America.
