Rene Tkacik

Rene Tkacik was killed while working on the Crossrail tunnel. Aged 43, a hugely experienced construction worker, he left his family in Slovakia to work here, living in Hackney Road.

He was in an exclusion zone in the deep tunnel near Fisher Street, Holborn, when nearly a tonne of wet concrete poured on him, crushing him to death.

In 2017 BFK, the joint venture between Bam Nuttall, Ferrovial and Kier, was found to have failed to properly enforce exclusion zones on the construction sites which could have helped save workers from foreseeable risks. It was fined more than £1M.
