Spoke repeatedly to Parliament against war with France. Outstanding figure in the Anti-Corn Law League (working with John Bright). His daughter, Ellen, married Walter Sickert. This involved lengthy detailed diplomacy in Paris and a good working relationship with Emperor Napoleon III". Died of an acute attack of bronchitis at 23 Suffolk Street.
