Sidney Eva

Sidney Eva was born on 10 February 1916 in Edmonton, Middlesex (now Greater London), the sixth of the ten children of Charles Alfred Eva (1879-1938) and Mary Ann Eva née Craswell (1880-1957). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1916 in the Edmonton Registration District. On 19 March 1916 he was baptised in St Mary's Church, Fore Street, Edmonton, where the baptismal register confirms his date of birth, that his family were living at 2 Edinburgh Road, Edmonton and that his father was a carriage lamp maker.

His nine siblings were: Charles Alfred Eva (1903-1992); Florence Lilian Eva (1904-1996); George Alfred Eva (1906-1974); Nellie Louisa Eva (b.1909); Alfred Alec Eva (1913-1915); Irene D. Eva (b.1918); Ivy May Eva (1921-1988); Robert Wembley Eva (1923-2000); and Rosina Gladys Eva (1926-1994).

When his father completed his 1921 census return form he showed Sidney Eva as aged 6 years, 2 months and in whole-time education, who was living in a five roomed property at 58 Woolmar Road, Edmonton. Also on the census return form he showed himself as a motor lamp maker, working on his own account at 21 Amwell Street, Clerkenwell, London and his wife as on home duties. He also listed his five other surviving children: Florence Lilian Eva, aged 16 years, 10 months - a silk stocking worker employed by Messrs Klinger, blouse and stocking manufacturers in Tottenham, Middlesex (now Greater London); George Alfred Eva, aged 14 years, 6 months; Nellie Louisa Eva, aged 13 years, 3 months - in whole-time education; Irene D. Eva, aged 3 years, 3 months and Ivy May Eva, aged 4 months.

He married Teresa Ivy Dacomo (1914-2003) in the 2nd quarter of 1936 in the Edmonton Registration District and they had three children: Sylvia Eva (b.1937); Ronald S.Eva (b.1939) and Raymond Eva (b.1942).

In the 1939 England and Wales Register he and his family were listed at 97 Mayes Road, Wood Green, London, N22. He was described as a foreman baker (small goods).

He was killed in the Moorgate tube disaster and his death, aged 59 years, was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1975 in the London City Registration District. Probate records confirm that he died on 28 February 1975 and that his address remained as 97 Mayes Road, London, N22. Administration of his estate was granted on 15 May 1975 and his effects totalled £21,756.

He is shown as 'EVA, SIDNEY' on the Moorgate tube disaster memorial in Finsbury Square, London, EC2.
