Turnpike trusts

Turnpike trusts were set up by parliament, with powers to collect tolls for maintaining the principal roads in Britain. In the 1830s, there were more than 1,000 such trusts, administering about 30,000 miles of turnpike road.

This is captioned "General Plan For Explaining The Different Trusts Of The Turnpike Gates In The Vicinity Of The Metropolis. Published By J. Cary, July 1st, 1790."
