Farnells

Inscription

These gardens between Uxbridge Road and Twyford Crescent used to contain two ponds, which were drained in the 18th Century. In 1903 the Round family sold the site of the ponds to the Council, which laid out Twyford Crescent and gardens on it.

A soft toy factory, J. K. Farnell and Co Ltd, was located nearby on the grounds of what is now Twyford Crescent School. In 1921, a bear made in the factory was sold to Daphne Milne in Harrods for her baby, Christopher Robin Milne, whose father AA Milne wrote a series of books based around the bear, Winne the Pooh.

The factory was destroyed by fire in 1934 and again by bombing in 1940. Farnells ceased trading in the 1960s.
