London Post Offices

Inscription

This was the site of one of London's earliest post offices.

The general post office system started in the City of London and seems to have been confined to Central London, north of the river until the mid 19th century when there was a branch south of the river, but in Borough High Street, not here. Quite possibly there was a branch post office here at a later date, but this plaque is misleading. It is either badly worded, inadequately researched or erected as a joke. Whichever - we disapprove!

Site: London Post Offices (2 memorials)

SE1, Bermondsey Street, 102

The PO plaque is between the first and second floor windows. The Dransfield plaque is between the second floor and the attic. This apparently random positioning suggests to us that they might be wall tie plates, like this one.

Bermondsey Street is a rather arty place so we wonder if these 2 “plaques” are more structural/art installations, than genuine historical markers.
