Plaque

Pearce

Erection date: 9/5/1893

Inscription

This stone was laid by Mr S. R. Pearce, Superintendent of the Metropolitan Tabernacle Sunday School, May 9th 1893, to commemorate the Ragged School work carried on in this neighbourhood under his superintendence.
"Hitherto hath the Lord helped us" 1 Sam. 7.6.12. v
{The quotation is from 1 Sam 7:12, so we can't explain the 6 or v.}

The Metropolitan Tabernacle is still there, on Newington Butts at Elephant and Castle. The biblical quote fails to hide the blatant self-promotion in this plaque.

Site: Ragged school (2 memorials)

SE1, Snowfields

The main front facade has three plaques:
- "Feed my lambs"
- 'Arthur's Mission Snow's-Fields 1865 - 1893'
- the Pearce plaque.

The Hoyland plaque is to the right, on the red brick wall just before the corner.

Presumably the Mission was named for someone called Arthur but we can't identify him.
