Erection date: /8/2020
This sculpture had been displayed at the Festival of Britain but was then lost. It was found in 2016 languishing in the garden of the Clarendon Hotel in Blackheath. it was, in 2019, put on display in the Royal Festival Hall and then in August 2020 it was moved to this mezzanine wall at Waterloo Station, until 2025. But we found it still there in February 2026. It is on loan from the O’Donnell Family and the Clarendon Hotel.
The sculpture was made in situ at the Festival and was located on the north wall of the station gate entrance to the exhibition, off York Road. People viewed the work from above. In our photo, at the bottom left, you can see part of an information panel with a photo showing the Sunbathers on site at the Festival. The location made sense of the positioning of the bodies, twisting around to look at the people who are looking at them. This is totally lost in the current location.

SE1, Waterloo Station
By 'mezzanine' we mean the half-floor around the main concourse, though Network Rail called it a 'balcony' in their announcing its opening in 2012.
In our photo the Battle of Waterloo medallion on its white marble is in front of the person in the black baseball cap and the Waterloo Station is above the blue Metro container. The sunbathers can just be made out, to the left of the head of the man in the pink shirt.
