Erection date: 1837
{Inscribed on the arch:}
G. B. Allen, R. M. Howard, E. T. Feilde, O. B. C. Harrison 1856
1837 L. Stanhope, T. Vincent, R. M. Richards 1837
We think the inscription on the arch is probably schoolboy graffiti, similar to that on the nearby Burlington Arch.
The quality of the inscriptions is surprisingly professional and the archivist at the School confirmed that the boys would employ stone masons for the work (a different world in so many ways). Note that the inscribed dates are almost 20 years apart.
The 1884 is not easy to understand but it looks as if an R. M. Howard and an R. M. Richards were listed as Captains of Elections, but in 1822, so surely not our lads? That publication also suggests to us that E. T. Feilde won a prize in 1837 - that surely is our boy.

SW1, Little Dean's Yard, Westminster School
Our photo captures a bit of the heavily-graffitied Burlington Arch, on the left.
The fountain seems to have been erected/dedicated twice, once in 1935 for the royal jubilee and again in 1971 to celebrate the long headship of John Carleton. Perhaps in 1971 the pre-existing fountain was modified in some significant way.
Little Dean's Yard is at the centre of the School and is known there as simply "Yard".
