Plaque

William Shipley

Erection date: 6/4/2016

Inscription

William Shipley, 1715 - 1803, held the foundation meeting of the (Royal) Society of Arts in Rawthmell's Coffee House on this site, 22 March 1754.
RSA 2016
Westminster City Council

This plaque commemorates the tercentenary of Shipley's birth and the site of RSA's first meeting place. Interesting that this is a Westminster plaque, when it was the Society of Arts which initiated the plaque scheme now being run by English Heritage. Wonder if they were turned down for a "blue plaque" here?
