Our eye was caught by this ornate pediment. The explains: "The artists’ studio to the rear of this house sits on Napier Road and was built for painter, Herbert Schmalz. It is a very charming building in stock brick with a large north window in Tudor style and stone surround with a cherub holding a fan {sic} with the initials H.S. and the date 1894 in the curved pediment."
gives the date of the construction of the house at number 49 as 1856–7 and the builders as Nicholson and Son, of Wandsworth.
The house was redeveloped and the studio added in 1893, the architect being John William Simpson.
