It is thought that this site was given to Catherine of Aragon by her father-in-law, King Henry VII, on the death of her husband and his son, Arthur, Prince of Wales, in 1502, as her dower house (a residence for the widow of an estate owner, etc.).

The current building, 1805–06, is grade 2 listed, but architect unknown. Now (2025) a .
