County of Middlesex

County of Middlesex

Former county. It became a shire in the 10th century, but much of the area was lost to the County of London with the passing of the Local Government Act of 1888 that came into effect on 21 March 1889. It officially ceased to exist in 1965 when the majority of it was absorbed into Greater London, so presumably, the Hogarth plaque was erected before then. The name however is still widely used in addresses.

While nearly all of the historic county of Middlesex was incorporated into Greater London in 1965, some parts were transferred to neighbouring counties. Specifically, Sunbury-on-Thames and Staines were transferred to Surrey and Potters Bar was transferred to Hertfordshire. Additionally, a small area of Stanwell, including the village of Poyle, was transferred to Berkshire.
