Dorothea Lambert Chambers

Dorothea Lambert Chambers (née Dorothea Katherine Douglass) was a British tennis player. She won seven Wimbledon women's singles titles and a gold medal at the 1908 Summer Olympics.

Born Ealing. Died Kensington. Married 1907 Robert Lambert Chambers giving her the unhyphenated surname Lambert Chambers

It's astonishing that tennis was even possible in the clothes that she had to wear, though we've come across a surprising reference in Chapter X of Dorothy Richardson's 1915 'Pilgrimage Volume 1, Pointed Roofs': "It was easier to play tennis with stays."  But how things change: 2022 saw a modification to the undergarment rule, allowing women to wear any colour of shorts under their vestigial skirts.
