Frederick Winsor

Gas engineer. Born Friedrich Albrecht Winzer (Anglicised as Frederick Albert Winsor) in Brunswick, Germany. He studied the technology of gas street lighting in Paris. In London he founded the Gas Light and Coke Company in 1807. By 1815, 30 miles of gas mains had been laid in London. He died in Paris. There is a memorial to him in Kensal Green cemetery bearing the inscription 'At evening time it shall be light (Zechariah 14:7)'
