This station was created in two halves. The London Brighton and South Coast Railway opened their side (the west side, largely outside our photo, on the right) in 1860. The east side, The London Chatham and Dover Railway (later South East and Chatham Railway, or SECR) was opened on 25 August 1862.
The Brighton side was rebuilt in 1898–1908. This has some lovely tiled maps in one of the entrance passageways. The Chatham side was rebuilt in 1906, as shown in this photo.
has a plan of the station in 1888. We note that two "gents" are shown, but not a single "ladies". Perhaps back then ladies just didn't.
