{On the armillary:}
Service above self
Rotary, founded in Chicago on 23rd February 1905. Paul Harris formed the first club with three other businessmen: Sylvester Schiele, a coal merchant, Gustavus Loehr, a mining engineer, and Hiram Shorey, a merchant sailor. Paul Harris named the new club "Rotary" because members met in rotation at their various places of business. Club membership grew rapidly. Soon Paul became convinced that the Rotary club could be developed into an important service movement and strove to extend Rotary to other cities around the world.

{Three stones by the armillary:}
In memory of of a courageous and unselfish man Tony Nind 2.1.1957 - 15.8.1998. His last ten years were voluntarily dedicated in services to Disability Action Sutton. Remembered with love, pride and gratitude by colleagues and the community. He made a difference.

There is a magic place nearby
Which everyone is free to try.
Treasures galore within your reach
To entertain, amuse or teach.
So come inside your library doors,
The freedom of the world is yours!
Suzanne Eccles

Sometimes it goes slowly at the library.
Sometimes it goes fast.
Looking at all the books I do hope it lasts.
Katie Johnson, aged 6.

{On a string of seven stones:}
Don't know of the past
Nor dream of the future
For time shall grow older
Seize the moment
Enjoy today
Not yesterday
Nor tomorrow.

An armillary (or astrolabe) is a model comprising rings showing the positions of astronomical objects. See Simon Wolff for others in London.
