Dame Vera Lynn

Dame Vera Lynn

Singer. Born Vera Margaret Welch in Thackeray Road, E6. She adopted her maternal grandmother's maiden name as her professional surname. She started performing publicly at the age of seven, and sang with various bands before turning solo. She came to national prominence in WW2 with songs such as 'We'll Meet Again' and 'There'll be Bluebirds Over the White Cliffs of Dover'. She toured extensively entertaining the troops, which earned her the epithet "The Forces' Sweetheart".

In 2009 at the age of 92, she became the oldest living artist to top the UK album charts with a compilation of her hits.
